More MLK Day events hit Milwaukee as Sherman Phoenix will carry out a community service project.
Sherman Phoenix, a Black business hub, 3536 W. Fond Du Lac Ave., will host its “MLK Day of Service” next Monday for the second year running. Participants will help make blankets to be donated to Home Away From Home Living Services, based in Milwaukee, an adult family home service that provides housing, meal, personal care services and 24-hour supervision to adults with disabilities.
The effort comes as part of Sherman Phoenix’s community impact initiatives to provide individual and family wellness in communities around Milwaukee.
“We’re calling it ‘More than a day off,’” said Dr. Stacia Thompson, director of the Sherman Phoenix Foundation. “It’s easy to attend. You don’t have to be there for the full four hours.”
The MLK Day of Service aims to be as easy an opportunity to attend as possible. Time commitments are flexible as Sherman Phoenix works to make as many blankets as possible throughout the event.
MLK Day of Service is free to attend for all ages. Lunch will be provided. Registration for the event can be found on Sherman Phoenix’s website.
Sherman Phoenix’s MLK Day of Service will be held at its building on Jan. 15 from 10 am until 2 pm.
