Registration is now open for the new Construction Leadership Academy, a management training opportunity for new and emerging leaders within the construction trades, New North announced in a press release Monday. The skills-development curriculum is provided by the NEW Construction Alliance (NEWCA) in partnership with the business & industry services department of Fox Valley Technical College (FVTC).

The 18-hour program offers an in-depth learning experience for emerging supervisors within the construction trades who seek to build or enhance the knowledge and skills needed to be effective leaders. The integrated curriculum, which is delivered in-person in three-hour segments, is organized around themes of managing self, a team, the work and its processes/systems.

“This type of training was requested by our NEW Construction Alliance members,” Jason Mathwig, industry alliance director for New North Inc, said. “They often have talented people in their organizations who are deserving of a promotion to a supervisory position, but the company lacks a ready-made leadership training program to prepare these individuals for their new roles. We believe the Construction Leadership Academy will provide the desired learning opportunity, along with the ability to engage with professionals in the nuanced construction industry.”

Two virtual sessions are available to learn more about the program and to have questions answered. They are on March 4 from 3-3:30 p.m. and on March 8 from 8:30-9 a.m. Registration for both sessions is available at https://t.ly/newcaleadership.

The first cohort of the Construction Leadership Academy will run on Thursdays from 7:30-10:30 a.m., starting March 21 and running through May 2. All sessions will be held at FVTC’s D.J. Bordini Center, and each cohort will be limited to 20 participants.

Judy Ruhl, a trainer/consultant at Fox Valley Technical College, will lead the sessions. She has a proven track record in helping leaders across multiple industries to meet their full potential. Her enthusiastic style keeps the training curriculum moving with a focus on skill building.

Among the desired outcomes of the curriculum is the ability to understand the skills, behaviors and attitudes needed for effective leadership in a commercial construction environment; a grasp of the psychology of employee engagement and satisfaction; tools for connecting and engaging both teams and individual team members; the communication skills needed to coach, provide feedback, initiate change and manage conflict; and the qualities needed to create high-performing teams.

A detailed, session-by-session listing of the curriculum is available on the registration page.

Two virtual Management Support Sessions, designed for the managers of Construction Leadership Academy participants, will be available. Participants can choose either March 11 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. or March 20 from 2-4 p.m.

The cost to participate in the Construction Leadership Academy is $750 per participant for current NEWCA investors and $1,500 per participant for non-members. The investment includes all assessments, materials, catering, learning-management system access and the time of the facilitator.

Participants who complete the curriculum will receive one associate degree credit and have the potential to earn advanced standing in the three-credit Supervision course.
