The Community Development Authority of the City of Madison (CDA), working closely with the City’s Economic Development Division (EDD), announced on Friday that it has executed a lease with Luna’s Groceries to open a store in the former Yue‐Wah grocery space at the Village on Park mall in the heart of South Madison.
Luna’s Groceries, a prominent food retailer in the Allied‐Dunn’s Marsh Neighborhood, opened in 2019 to serve what had been a food desert in the Allied Drive neighborhood. Since its opening, Luna’s has become a healthy food retailer and community resource hub for neighborhood residents.
“When we opened Luna’s Groceries in Allied Drive in 2019, it was always my desire and intention to bring healthy food and accessible food to residents of the neighborhood. Our current store embodies our motto of ‘bringing food to the hungry walker’ and we are committed to doing the same thing in South Madison by offering diverse and healthy food options to residents and visitors to the neighborhood,” Luna’s Groceries owner Mariam Maldonado said in a statement.
Luna’s was committed to open a larger store to anchor a major development on South Park Street, but had to step away from that project amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Before Luna’s can open its new store at the Village on Park, the CDA needs to renovate the current store space, according to a press release from the City of Madison, and the grocery renovations are expected to be completed in late spring of 2024, with Luna’s making their tenant improvements afterward.
